Nachdem das ASA-Projekt „Describing urban changes in Baku [2008]“ für unsere Vorgänger Oriana Kramer und Sebastian Burger so erfolgreich verlief und die Resultate unter anderem in einigen Ausstellungen und in ihren Abschlussarbeiten einflossen, sollte es ein Nachfolgeprojekt unter gleichen Namen geben – aber unter etwas anderen Aspekten.
Das diesjährige Team besteht aus dem Studenten der Stadtplanung Michael Kraus (ISR, TU Berlin) und dem Fotografen Jens Kramer. Seit Juni 2009 sind wir nun in Baku aktiv.

Unser Ziel ist es einerseits einen auf Foto und Video basierenden Überblick über die städtebauliche Entwicklungsphasen Bakus zu geben und andererseits die spannungsträchtige Thematik mit Emotionen der Bewohner Bakus zu untermalen. Dabei wollen wir durch Interviews vor allem ihre Gedanken und Empfindungen in dieser von städtebaulichen Wandel und Brüchen geprägten Stadt einfangen.
Die Ergebnisse des Projekts möchten wir in verschiedenen Medien präsentieren. Derzeit denken wir über eine interaktive Onlinepräsentation nach, aber auch multimediale Ausstellungen (Fotografien auf Paper, Film auf Monitor) und eine Publikation in Buchform können wir uns vorstellen.
Einige fotografische Arbeitsproben der vergangenen Projektwochen werden wir hier in den kommenden Tagen präsentieren. Also dran bleiben!

Since the train stops quite often quite long, you can easily feed you through the “buffet” markets of the stations..
fährt in der Hochsaison zwei- in der Nebensaison einmal. Bei mir: vergangenen Donnerstag 19:15 in Teheran ab, Sonntag um 23 Uhr mit 8 h Verspätung in Istanbul an. Letzte Fähre verpasst, auf der asiatischen Seite im Bahnhof 5 h auf die erste Fähre nach “Europa” gewartet, ansonsten empfehlenswert!

I am already writing from Tehran, another city another interesting topic, maybe the next “Urban changes project” (-;
It took precisely 24 h from Baku trainstation to arrive in Tehran. A real nice and recommandable night train (leaves daily except for Monday at 23.55h arrives in Astara at 9.30 and costs 5 Euro for 2 men cabin) and a usual bus connection from the Iranian Border (this time I wasn´t even asked if I carry porno stuff or so) to its Capital (it took 13 instead of 9 hours because I got the one rainy day out of 365 days of the year ;-)
From Tehran I will take the Trans-Asia-Express (like the Transsiberian Railway but south of it) to Istanbul, to spend some time over there and take the last Train from Istanbul to Frankfurt which we already took on our way to Baku.
So with these last unsorted pictures I want to say goodbye to Azerbaijan:

Gerade schreibe ich schon aus Teheran - der Nachzug von Baku zur Astara, der Grenzstadt war herrlich (5 Euro Ticketpreis, Reservierung inkl. für ein ordentliches Bett im “luxus” Abteil in dem uralten Zug), die Busreise nach Teheran solala, wegen Regen dauerte es 13 statt 9 Stunden - es regnet so gut wie nie.
Am Donnerstag gehts auf dem Landweg weiter nach Istanbul, dann nach Frankfurt.
Nach bis dato mehr zynischen oder anderweitig Aserbaidschan eher in Mißkredit bringenden Posts als freundlichen nun nochmal ein letzter Ausgleich:

Next Monday I take the train to Tehran. Then Istanbul. Budapest and finally Frankfurt
I will have spend 3,5 monts in Baku with a quite dense time and different experiences.
Definitely worth it, that can already be said even without a distant look.
Meine letzte Woche in Baku bricht an - Montag, den 3.11. werde ich mich per Zug nach Teheran aufmachen, um dann wieder über Istanbul und Budapest nach Frankfurt zu fahren. Same precedure as 3,5 Monate vorher - auch ohne Distanz kann ich sagen, dass sich diese dichte Zeit auf jeden Fall gelohnt hat. Ich habe viele verschiedene Erfahrungen hier in Baku gemacht
Einer der wirklich originären Künstler in Baku muß Niyaz sein. Dank eines Zufalls wurde ich mit zu einer Visite in seiner privaten Wohnung eingeladen. Siehe Bilder - ist diese über und über mit Bildern gespickt. Es ist schon so ein Abenteuer, auf seinem Bett zu sitzen und die aktuellen Werke vorgeführt zu bekommen. Da das Malen für ihn eine Art Autotherapie ist - aus seiner Drogenvergangenheit macht er kein Hehl - möchte der die Bilder schnell verkaufen und hat letztlich auch einen recht hohen durchsatz. Gott sei dank, sagt er, kann er (und seine Frau, die in intensiven Phasen in die Wohnung ihrer Mutter flüchten muß) vom Malen leben. Er war in Aachen und Berlin ausgestellt und hat z.Z. 20 Werke in Baku ausgestellt. (Niyazi Str. 41).
Wer gerne bei ihm vorbeischauen möchte - einfach mailen, ich teile die Handynummer mit. One of the defnitely original painters of Baku must be Niyaz whose flat I visit by chance. Together with some friends I sit on his bed and we are shown several paintings. This 41 years old guy went through some tough drug experiences and cures. Now his obsession and autocure is painting and due to the fact that he can sell them he has quite a high output. Actually he´s not so much interested in being exhibited and stuff. It´s really about painting for him - that is what I like. Unfortunately I can´t understand a word of his Russian, but what my friend translate plus his mimics: I got a quite good impression of this artist. If you like oil on canvas go see him, I volunteerly transfer his mobile numer on email request. Not as nice as visiting his flat in Xatai/Baku is the galley, but still 25 paintings are to seen by: Nizami Küc. 41.

Der deutsche Botschafter Dr. Stanchina war so nett nochmals mit uns eine kleine Tagestour ins Umland Bakus zu machen, um den Schöller-Kanal (benannt nach dem deutschstämmigen Ingenieur, der ihn angelegt hat) von oben zu besichtigen. Wegen schlechter Sicht (auf ihn) gibt es nun alles andere Schöne oder Interessante zu sehen:

Overview: “Describing urban changes” is a project of two students from Germany who tried to document the transformations of the fast growing capital. Between July and October 2008 the project team was observing the current urban changes that the Caspian Metropolis Baku is going through and its aesthetic, social and environmental impacts. The findings of the project will be exhibited in Baku and Europe, a book on the project will also be published.
Language: The presentation will be conducted in English.

Ursprünglich wollte ich diesen Blogeintrag “Of cats and rats” nennen, aber nun ist in letzter Minute doch noch das Element Hund hinzugekommen. Mit aus dem Urlaub sind einige Hunde mit zurückgekommen.

der eine oder die andere mag sich vielleicht schon gefragt haben: was fotografiert der Knabe eigentlich noch so ausser Häuser ?!
Da mir “sozial-kram” eh mehr liegt als reine Architektur-Fotografie, habe ich mir inzwischen 5 “Baustellen” gesucht, die ich regelmässig besuche. 1-2 werde ich wohl fallen lassen müssen, weil mir die Sprachbarriere zu große Hürden in den Weg legt, aber dennoch: es handelt sich um ein besetztes Haus, das als ganzes von einer Gruppe bewohnt wird, mit verschwimmenden Grenzen. Eine Wohnung, in einem normalen Haus, die “ganz normal” als Wohnung benutzt wird. Ein großes Hofhaus mit Bakus größten Innenhof, das in einem Jahr abgerissen wird, ein kleiner Innenhof, umrandet von verschiedenen kleinen ge-patchworkten Hausteilen und so eine Art Slum.
Habt Verständnis dafür, dass ich hier im Blog nicht repräsentativ Bilder zeigen kann, das würde spätere Veröffentlichungen gefährden…

some may have wondered What actually I am shooting except for architecture…
Basically I have around 5 spots that I irregularly visit . It is a squatted house, a flat, a tiny yard sourounded by patchworked one storey detached houses, a huge house, 4 storeys with a big big yard and kind of a refugee-camp being more and more surrounded by highrises.
Understand that for later publications I can´t representativly show my photos on the blog. But some…
That´s a poster for the current president Ilham Aliyev, son of Heydar Aliyev, the old president.
But I have to admit: this picture is not current anymore - already the next day a second poster of the “pro-govermental opposition” was sticked.
In einem Monat sind Wahlen, hier ein Poster vom bereits regierenden Präsidenten Ilham Aliyev, Sohn des alten Präsidenten Heydar Aliyev. Aber der Gerechtigkeit halber muß ergänzt werden: bereits in den nächsten Tagen kam ein Zweites Plakat hinzu: eines der “Pro-Regierungs Opposition”.
